Peter....Ider thought difficult to ID other than it appears to be woody carbonised remains of a stem, but they must be a known species in the area? .... Nice find....

Hi Steve...thanks, yes the ROM id it for me as they are familiar with this material... also scott from TFF came up with the same id. This is my first real plant fossil from Kettle Point Formation. Generally this area is not hunted as there is generally not much to find but that area has yielded soft tissue preservation ie worms.... that are currently being studied at Yale and ROM.

Thanks Steve... fossils in the Kettle Point Black Shale are infrequent so this one is a real prize. Most of the black shale appears blank hence few collectors bother with this formation... but some of the rarest fossils in Ontario can be found here : ) Peter

Thanks Paleoflor! lots of fun exploring the Kettle Point Formation... rich organic deposits with poor fossil diversity = deep water anoxic conditions during depostion in Late Devonian era.... Peter

Peter,
The last colorful picture from Kettle Point, is that of fish bone material; probably Placoderm.
