It will be a place for recreation in open nature in the near future. No digging for us anymore within a few years! It's a long shot, but have you asked the authorities whether it would be possible to keep open part of the quarry for fossils, for educational purposes? We managed to get this done at an old coal tip in Yorkshire, so that they could run school and family events such as this: thelandtrust.org.uk/community/event-detail.html?EID=4850As long as it's an area without dangerous cliffs, etc., it might be possible to do something - especially if you could get a local museum or university involved. It sounds like this site might be worth fighting for a bit...
