I am a complete newbie. In my first two forays I have been inundated with things that I can't identify, multiple fossils in every rock. This one looks like short bit of water pipe ~55mm long and 20mm wide. When I broke its parent rock open it looked as if it had been painted with distemper which crumbled immediately. Since I found the specimen two hours ago it has begun to dry out and appears to be crumbling, so I dare not try to clean it. The location is near Presteigne, but the BGS is unspecific on bedrock in the precise location. Wenlock? Ludlow? Llandovery? Any hints are welcome, both on identity and preservation. HELP - I can't load the picture as the forum has exceeded it's space limit

Hi Brian, Welcome, and apologiea for the long delay - it's a bit quiet around here, and I've been away, then ill, then totally snowed under trying to get back on track! I'm also going to be looking at alternatives for this forum, as there are various other issues as well as the space. We're going to have to make some decisions about it all at some point... Now, your fossil... I can only see the thumbnail, but it seems to be either part of the body chamber (the widest end) of an orthocone nautiloid, or possible one of the larger bivalves. Are there obvious growth lines on it, and if so, are they transverse or to do bend to follow the sides?
