That is nice! How well do the fossils from that locality keep? I have had a nasty experience with pyritised twigs decaying - we did eventually get most of the stain out of the carpet!

This is my first visit to Arkona to collect Devonian fossils and I presume the pyritized fossil is stable as it was dug out of a clay pit ( decomposed shale) in damp enviroment. PL

It is a truly gorgeous goniatite, and I hope it stays that way! Being in a damp clay pit is no guarantee - clay will have kept oxygen away, and that is needed for corrosion as well. Kepp a very close eye on it over the winter - any sign of tiny white crystals on it, and it's probably going to go. There are ways to get around it if it does, but it's a shame to coat it in something sticky unnecessarily...

Thanks for the warning Joe. If I store the fossil in Olive oil will it stabilize the pyrite? PL

Hmmm... yes, but eventually it will go rancid - nice ! Mineral oil will do it, though, and if you're getting a lot of pyritised fossils it may well be worth buying a fair bit.

Thank you Joe. I will store pyritized fossil in mineral oil. Good thing the fossil is only 6mm diameter.... does not really take up much room for storage. PL

This is for the few who still lurk in the background... It is no fun carry on a monologue....... This forum is next to dead with zero activity with sub critical mass. Imaged Trilobite Compound Eye ... stacked images via Helicon Processor:

Hi pleecan,
Sorry, we have been neglecting this forum a bit - will try to make up for it.
Love the trilobite eye - you've obviously got the hang of stacking images! I got to see a bit of that in my last job, it's a bit magical when you see the final result.
We're about to go off on fieldwork for a couple of days - will post a few pictures of anything interesting when we get back.

Hi Lucy: This board is alive again... I was almost going to pack up and leave for good. I am really excited as I recently acquired a free Helicon Pro lifetime software for submitting some material to the Heliconsoft. Good luck on your field work! Peter
