Wow... that's gorgeous preservation. Usually the palaeoscolecids from there are quite poor, with little cuticle detail, but here you can clearly see the lines of tubercles, and I reckon it would be well worth putting into an SEM. There's been a bit of work done on the cuticle structure of the Chengjiang (e.g. Han et al.: app.pan.pl/archive/published/app52/app52-423.pdf) and you can see that it seems somewhat different in those species. Yours looks much more like a classic Palaeoscolex, which is much less well known from Chengjiang, and would be really interesting to see close up. Dare I ask how you got hold of it, though? I thought all export of Chengjiang fossils was illegal!

Hi Joe: Thanks for the link.... I was reluctant to buy this fossil as I have been burned in the past with fakes from China.....I bought this fossil on Ebay for 99 cents + $20 shipping... I was the only bidder .... upon examination under the microscope.... think it is the real thing. There are dozens of worms on the plate of different type. Which I will post more images..... PL

Very nice! I reckon all the new images are Cricocosmia, in different levels of preservation. I've seen some with little cuticle preservation at all, but the gut trace very clear, as in the bottom one. The palaeoscolecid is likely either Maotianshania cylindrica or Palaeoscolex sinensis, but I've not seen either with such a well preserved cuticle... looks to me like a true Palaeoscolex, though.

Thanks for your insights Joe!. By the way I tried the link (e.g. Han et al.: app.pan.pl/archive/published/app52/app52-423.pdf)and I seem to be getting an error... page not found... thought at first because I am on dial up for internet... thought it might have timed out so I tried the link at work on high speed internet connection and still got an error ..." app.pan.pl" not found. BTW there are also arthropods on the same worm plate from Chengjian.... can't believe this was a 99 cent fossil... had so much fun examining it. PL

For the link, there's a rogue bracket on the end - just delete that and it will work!
