Hi: Here are some Devonian microfossils from Arkona ON Canada. The Arkona Shale is part of the Hamilton Formation and these microfossils are from my fossil washings that are found on the bottom of a ultrasonic cleaner so instead of throwing out the sediments... I constructed optic systems described in the Photography section to capture images of these critters.... Having lots of fun!

I see ostracodes, a trilobite librigena, and that weird thing that looks like the internal mould of a crinoid column. Anything else?

Arkona sediments are fun to look at..... especially if you find micro teeth

Peter, Is the (relatively) large thing roughly centre in the first new photo a tooth?

<blush> It looks much more interesting than the line drawings I've seen would indicate. :-)

These are some of the sharpest images produced. The first ostracod is Ctenoloculina sp . PL

Ostracodes can be stunning things, and the first one of these in particular is lovely. We get some gorgeous ones in the Ordovician as well; these are the Builth Inlier ones that I was looking at a while ago: asoldasthehills.org/Ostracodes.htmlYou've got it easy here, Peter - I had to take latex casts of individual valves preserved as external moulds on surfaces in mudstone, then get them into an SEM.

I'm supposed to be reading archaeology (Coursera course just started) and I'm being distracted by ostracodes. :-) Really beautiful images, Peter! Joe, the drawings are excellent too, and obviously weren't easy to get.

Thanks all for you excellent comments... just came back from 5 days of fossil hunting at Arkona.. the big break through was the use of pulse AC flash unit synchronized to the digital camera shutters... that help freeze the image. The Ostracods are +220um sieve fraction.

Joe: Excellent link to beautiful ostracod drawings! Must have taken a long time to draw... very elegant.
