One of the most challenging and interesting aspects of paleobotany is reconstructing the complete plant. It is also very important, because our methods to deduce the evolutionary relationships between different species/groups such as cladistics don't work on separate bits and pieces. The two schematics are from Bureau and Langford. The fossils are my interpretation of the different lose fossils. It would be fun to further complete the picture, so any contributions of "missing puzzle pieces" are more than welcome! Attachments:

Tim.... Good idea for a thread.... We can keep adding bits to this... Paracalamostachys Spadiciformis, the 'not so well known' or even heard of Calamites cone, with one demonstrating its still attached to the Asterophyllites stem... Attachments:

Asterophyllites... One of the first nodules I ever broke had a tiny bit of this delecate foliage in... I was always happy to find a bigger piece of the jigsaw... Attachments:

Outer stem showing where leafs attached at the node junction... I reckon as the branches grew bigger in diameter the function becomes more of a structural component for the growth of the tree and consequently maybe shed the leafs at the junction as they were probably shaded by the upper growth anyhow....
