It should be noted that the great number of different Calamites morphospecies is reflected in the -at least as great- number of different Calamites-tree reconstructions. I really love this interpretative part of paleobotany, this is what makes it interesting and something you can keep discussing on (schematics from Bureau). Attachments:

Tim.... I know what you mean, its an area where you 'think' you have all the pieces of the jigsaw and the discovery of one new fossil can be quite significant and alter many things... Ive borrowed your reconstructions... I hope you dont mind... I've come across a couple of bits of ' Phyllotheca like' structures and these are the best.... Attachments:

Some great examples there Tim... Youve reminded me to keep an eye out for a Calamites branch scar... I dont think I put one in my collection... Attachments:

No problem, use them if you like. And really nice Phyllotheca specimens, especially the second one.
BTW, I might have some Calamites branch scars in my trade material, so if you would like to trade some Dutch material for British material, just send me an email...

Tim.... Thanks for the offer of a trade but unfortunately I only collect UK Lias & Carb material... anything else I have just gets put in a box and forgot about..... I stick to my collecting boundries these days to avoid accumulating fossils I dont need or want....I had a quick look through my trade material and found a couple of calamites nodes... I only looked in one box so theres probably better nodular examples stashed in there... Attachments:

OK, too bad, I had hoped to be able to get some UK material (it is something seriously lacking in my collection, regarding provenance)...
Nice material, as always! No need to "pollute" it with any rubbish from the European mainland ;-)

Tim... I almost felt sorry for you then ;-)... If theres an opportunity ever arises to come and collect some, and more importantly, its worth the effort to come, I'll let you know...
