Hi, I tried to post this in the ID section but the attachment facility didn't show...
This is from a Brigantian marine shale (N.E. England) which is packed with fenestellids, brachiopods, orthocones etc. - it reminded me of a hexactinellid, or is it just an odd bit of shell (can't place it if it is)? Thanks,

Hmm... nice try, but I can't see any spicule mesh. I reckon it's part of a gastropod (or possibly nautiloid).

Thanks very much, Joe, I thought that would probably be the case, must try to match it with a shell.
Just a thought - could it be a bit of rostroconch?

Never seen a rostroconch with that sort of sculpture, so I'd say a gastropod or other mollusc... but I can't pin it down to anything specific.

I've just been browsing the Nautiloidea Treatise and it fits well with quite a few orthocerids with similar ornament.

My first impression was a trilobite... those 2 circular objects represent eyes? PL

Thanks Peter, I see what you mean but I'm afraid they're baby brachiopods or bivalves - this stuff is packed with all sizes of both. Trilobites do occur in the next marine shale up though - I've got some bits but no complete ones yet (they are there!)

Thanks Tarquin... at least we have a definitive ID. There is lots to learn on these forums... lots of fun. Peter

Steve, it won't be for want of looking! - mind you, it's been pretty windy so the Yorkshire coastal Lias beckons this weekend... might be some nice erratic Carb corals though!
Peter, it is all great fun, a (relatively) harmless addiction!
