Ive recently got interested in fossils through my Seven yr old who is trilobite mad!
We have found some nice specimens, a couple of completes and lots of partials.
We are looking to try Gilwern next week, i beleive you have to speak to the owner and pay? it will be an interesting trip for us.

Hi Paul, and welcome. I believe you're correct about Gilwern, but the trilobites can be spectacular. I'd love to see some photos of what you find!

Hi Paul, and welcome! Good to have you along, especially with the local interest. Gilwern is indeed run by a farmer for small profit, but it's a fascinating site and worthwhile. Although it is famous for trilobites there is a lot more to it than that - undescribed echinoderms, sponges, hydroids, large arthropod fragments and some weird graptolites, although in general these oddities are rare. Please don't just look for trilobites, though - they're common there, and you will find some. It's the rest of it that gets really fascinating. Actually, we've got a favour to ask... could you take some photos of the outcrops for us, please? We could really do with a picture of the quarry in general, and some closer shots where you can see the bedding. The reason is we're writing a paper outlining the different types of exceptional preservtion in the area, and Gilwern is somewhere we've hardly ever been so we have no pictures of it! Looking forward to seeing what you find (especially any "weird blobs"!), Joe

Excellent - a good start is all you can ask for from a first trip! We often only start seeing the really interesting things turn up after we're really familiar. Pm sent as well, but if you've got any mysteries, please do post them here too!

Hoppy & Will.... Sounds like a very productive first venture to Gilwern... It takes a while to get your eye in though I would imagine as certain beds will be more abubdantly populated with fossils...The trick is to find these beds....(or) learn something new each time you go from what or where you find stuff, thats what I usually try and do.... Interesting to read on the other channel that one of your trilobite collecting area's has been closed for access.... no doubt unscrupulous trilobite collectors leaving litter etc... Landowners will soon get fed up with that...
