Dr X. Ma at NHM commented " It is a new species I believe" I will be sending her more close up shots....

That is extremely interesting, Peter... especially as Lucy is currently working on a much later species that seems to me to share one critical (and otherwise unique) character with this one. A challenge for you... don't worry, it's right up your street. Look under the highest mag you can get for an extremely distinct, very regular reticulation - basically a square grid. If it's there you'll know it immediately. Also, look for little round plates along the edge of the segment grooves that run down one side. Just when you think everything has come out of a site already...

Hi Joe: Just pm you a link to uploaded pics of the Chengjiang worm for you and Lucy, Dr Ma has access to the pics also and I have sent her an email with the link. I see faint rectangles... and structures that look like crosses...

Dr Ma has id the fossil worm " After looking through them carefully, I was wrong to think that it might be a new species. In fact, this worm is the typical "Cricocosmia jinningensis", but was preserved slightly differently. "

Ah well - shame, but thanks for letting us know. That explains why I couldn't see anything exciting in the close-ups... Still, it's a lovely example, and great to have as a reference for your next discovery...

Thanks Joe... I have lots of fun... I have been pushing that resolution envelope with 32" projection distance and the 40mm F1.8 Konica Hexanon lens.... the Z-X translation stage works extremely well... got the used parts at 75% discount relative to new unit and bought 7 Zaxis translation stages from Malaysia... cleared them : ).... when integrated.... these stages are more precise than microscope stages. latest incarnation:
