Peter... In the lower photo's it almost looks like it is seperating from the matrix... Presumably you popped this rock open and it wasnt already cracked?...

The area was in a quarry fresh blast zone and the layers were fractured... I peeled the layers apart to find carbonized plant material on dolostone...... it is a fresh fracture may be 2 weeks old.... I saw then blast the rock but the area was restricted to collecting till now..

This is a bit of a weirdie... Not graptolite, for starters - too big, and no thecae. Morphologically it could be algae, but that's a very solid sheet and looks more mineralised than carbonised (I could be wrong there). What is it like in cross-section (part and counterpart)? Does it extend into the rock, or is it purely a film?

The black is carbon film.... there are huge sheet of Algae in the Fiddliers Green formation.... there are microstructures in the black film... pretty sure it is some sort of algae... this came from a fresh blast zone.... the black projections are about the size of fingers.... first time seeing this intersting form.... there are also large stromatolites near by...
