Well, we had l0, which is good enough for me! They all seemed pretty keen to come back next month, so we'll see what happens. The first meeting was always going to be mostly about the organisation of the group and working out what we all wanted, but we had lots of random discussions about fossils as well - which is what it's all about. Roll on next month, when we're hoping the weather will let us get out into the field as well..!

Thanks Steve... you'd be very welcome to come along if you're ever in the area at about the time of one of our meetings - could give us a talk on Carb concretions. Fingers crossed indeed for some decent weather in March - it's obvious that everyone is itching to get out into the field, for some reason... I hear there might be some fossils to find, or something.

I'm so glad it went well!
I was going to threaten to join you but didn't pass my driving test. Worse, the neighbours were driving there...but I'm stuck here taking care of their dog. Not to be, I guess. This month, at least. :-)

Hi Reighan - sorry, I missed this one. Sorry to hear about the driving test tribulations, but keep your chin up - you'll get there, I'm sure. Once you do get it, you would of course be very welcome to come and visit, and also to talk about your finds on the shoreline. Consider yourself our first - sorry, second - invited speaker. Just had the second meeting, and it's going well. We managed a little jaunt out to see the rocks at Llanfawr as well, and some very nice finds turned up - including a new sponge for me, so I can't complain.

I was pointed in your direction by Colin at Mid Wales Geology Club ....would you be interested in:
1) Writing a short piece on the new Club for publication in the North Wales Geology Association Newsletter? 2) We are short a speaker slot in May - talks at Pensychnant, Conwy. Sensible expenses paid. Any interest? 3) Can you keep me updated - as I would like to attend your meetings occasionally

Hi Moldy, That'll be a yes, probably and yes. Thanks for the invitation; we'd certainly be very happy to write something short for the newsletter (roughly how many words?), and will add you to the email list (you can send me a pm with your email address). For the talk, it depends on when it would be in May (we're away at the end of it), and whether you could manage to cover travel expenses for one (or even both) of us. We're working on a very limited budget at the moment, and the trains aren't cheap, alas. If so, what would you be interested in? A talk about the highlights of the Builth Inlier would certainly be easy. Of course, you'd be very welcome to come along to some of the monthly meetings whenever you like. All the best, Joe

Thanks for the extra detail... although it's left us a bit confused, as neither of us have ever worked on the Gamlan Formation. We've done a little bit on the Hell's Mouth Bay area, but that's not published yet, and it was on different formations. If you mean the Afon Gam Biota, then yes, we've been working on that and are in the process of publishing, but the work is under embargo (except for academic conferences) until the announcement paper is published... which makes it rather awkward. I'm not sure how National Geographic would regard a talk to a geological club, but they can get awkward. We could always do a talk about that in future, though, once it's published. The Builth Inlier work is certainly the easiest to do, and does involve Welsh Konservat-Lagerstatten... that would be our choice, overall.

Keith - have sent you a pm.
I just want to announce that we've got Bertrand Lefebvre coming to the August meeting (Saturday 2nd), and he's kindly going to give us a bit of a talk on carpoids. Given that he is the world expert on these rare fossils, and is coming to see all the sites that have produced them in the Llandrindod area, it should be a really interesting day.
For the next meeting, on April 5th, Lucy will be talking about graptolites, and I'll be giving a brief description of a new site with sponges and weirdies (the one in the latest thread on a new sponge fauna). We'll also be showing an ongoing map/database of local fossil localities, and discussing where the club goes from here, and we will hopefully have a variety of other peoples' finds brought in for general delight and discussion. For the field trip, we're thinking of having a scramble along Bach-y-Graig, seeing a whole range of different fossil assemblages in one section.
