Well, well, well. That there do be a sponge, Peter. On the zoomed view, you can see spicules all over the place, including tiny monaxons projecting from the margin at a high angle (especially in the lower part), and some more robust ones that are roughly branch-parallel. Is this a close up of a previous specimen, or a new find? Really good clear photo, too - well done.

Just a follow-up: it seems to be something very like Arborispongia delicatula (Carboniferous of Bear Gulch, Montana) - may well be a different species of the same genus. Finks & Rigby (2004) put it in the Halichondritidae, which may actually be about right when you consider the structural features... although it would have to be rather derived.

Some very nice details here, Peter - I hadn't realised there was so much of it. I would think that specimen should be describable, if you're interested... Arborispongia pleecani has a nice ring to it.
