Very nice Steve... what methods do you use to split the nodules? Do you freeze thaw or bake in oven then hyerquench in cold water? or a simple tap with the hammer?

Peter... after determining the best place to hit the nodule (with experience) a gauged tap with a brick hammer using another hammer as an anvil to rest the nodule on... Attachments:

Thanks Steve. You must have alot of experience with these nodules : ) The luck factor is important with this method. Peter

Peter... I think its all luck to be honest besides obviously learning as you go the 'area's certain fossils are coming from... They move thousands of ton's of rock every day so to 'drop on' its certainly not expertise of any kind...you can statistically increase your chances by collecting more often and hence breaking open more nodules....

I managed to get out collecting today on a bank we had collected heavily in the past that had been left for a while and had weathered a few nodules out... Some rather nice 3D Cyclopteris... Asterophyllites, Neuropteris and Calamites with plenty other bits and bobs...The Calamostachys looks a bit different with longer leafs and a rachis of some description that I'm not sure on the ID...
