Nautiloid ' Time Capsule '... I had a little wander along the Somerset coast yesterday and noticed this laying amongst the rocks... at first glance I thought a worn nautilus body chamber and then I thought about hitting it open to see what was inside... The aperture of the nautilus shell is so large it can fit some pretty big bits & bobs inside and in the past I have noticed complete ammonites so considering it is already trashed by erosion its certainly worth a look...I brought it back to photograph it intact as I didnt have my camera with me... My first view of the body chamber... Attachments:

When I turned it over again I saw this... a nautilus in a nautilus... certainly a first for me...shame they are both worn it would of made a truly magnificent display piece... Attachments:

Because I have spent many years scouring the coasts and havent seen this before I thought it was important to save the moment... when a nautilus shell washed into a nautilus shell...and also have a look what else was in there...So i sectioned off what was needed to preserve this... There were 2 small ammonites, plenty of shells and crinoid stem... as well as the obvious 'small nautilus'...and a piece of the larger nautilus shell that must of broken off preserved in elevation... I got my Lyme Regis Lower Lias fossils book out... Foriminifora Nodosarius fotinensis... Sectioned in 'Plan' seems to fit the bill for the star shaped object quite well shape wise and geologically situated...

Presumably a plan view of some type of Crinoid stem?... I wonder at a section through an echinoid spine instead? Whatever, you've got quite a menagerie in there.
