Thanks Steve. We do have options now, and one of them is a much smaller place... but which we could buy outright! The perks of flats that need a lot of work, in the cheapest town in the country per square metre... ) We'll see how it goes, but at least there are possibilities. In the meantime, I've got to finish a paper on the Fezouata sponges in the next couple of weeks, so that'll keep me out of mischief.

View AttachmentView AttachmentSometimes I have no idea where the time goes... two months since I was last on? Blimey. Sorry about that! I'm in full teaching mode at the moment, and still trying to buy this flat (the freeholder doesn't seem to care, but wants us to pay his solicitor's fees if we want to bother buying it... sigh). This is a beastie and a half, though. My only thought is some sort of crustacean (or at least arthropod) carapace, as are so common in the Cambrian. It looks compressed and pyritised, so was probably unmineralised. Worth contacting Steve Etches to see whether he's got similar?

Thanks for the suggestions Joe..... It has given me some other possibilities... It was suggested it might be part of a nautilus shell but I'm not convinced... Shell doesnt often naturally break creating ' bird mouth' shaped pieces...

I love to see what you are doing, Steve. Hopefully Joe and Lucy will check in soon and have interesting stuff to share. Or at least new publications promised. :-) Guess what? China's updated its firewall since we were there last... now it blocks most forums as well. But, we're back. And then my laptop died. Fun times! Still, it was a month well spent... Sponges in the end-Ordovician extinction, and boy were they surprising. Sadly I can't put anything much up in public at the moment, but watch this space... There are a couple of other interesting papers coming out soon, with any luck: the Llanfallteg Biota should be online shorty, for one. As soon as that's up I can spill the beans.

Cheers, Steve! Perhaps not so exciting (maybe?), but just as satisfying, surely... it's a work of art to reveal one of these in all their glory.
